Writer's Group | Melissa's Story

Hi everyone! My name is Melissa. I thought it would be a good idea to introduce myself and give you a little bit of a background about how I ended up at Grace. It's actually a long story, but here is the condensed version:

I started coming to this church about a year ago and fell in love with everything about Grace from the first visit. I had been part of a church in Michigan about 10 years ago, but made the brilliant decision to strike out on my own and tackle life single-handedly. That was a bad choice. Lots of bad choices later, I ended up moving back to Florida with my family. I was pretty much treading water and fighting to keep my head up. Then one day, after a few thousand days spent ignoring what my heart was crying out, I finally decided to listen to God. I told my mother on a Thursday I wanted to go to church that Sunday. I waved my white flag and gave up my struggle. I totally was a prodigal child who ran back into my Father's arms.

My journey to the gospel of grace wasn't dramatic in the sense that I left behind a lot of wrong thinking or ingrained thought patterns. You can't recover from something you never really allowed to dominate your life. My church life as a child was spent ignoring the message. My brief time in church as an adult (after giving my life to the Lord) was spent trying to figure out how to make it all work.

I thought there was some secret prayer language I wasn't able to unlock or maybe a level of faith I wasn't able to attain. I gave up trying before I really understood what it was I was trying to do. Fast-forward to now and I am insanely grateful that God brought me to Grace Church. He didn't let me languish in a church that might have put me back into the mindset I previously had.

So, here I am and here we are in this awesome new adventure. The Writer's Group is something myself and the Creative Director Mio Frye have been talking about for a little bit. It is our hope and our prayer that this group will allow us the opportunity to demonstrate what living under grace instead of the law looks like in everyday situations. We want the Journal on our website to be an extension of the message we have embraced. We have reached out to a few people we know are writers, but then we started thinking... how many of our Storytellers have the desire to be a part of this exciting opportunity?

With that in mind, we would like to extend the invitation to anyone who is interested in joining this group. We are having an informational meeting this Tuesday, May 10th from 6:30-7:30pm at church. If you are interested in learning more about the nature of this group, please feel free to come. Bring any questions with you!

WRITERS GROUP/ GRACE JOURNAL
MISSION STATEMENT

Part of Grace Church’s heart and mission is to inspire an awareness of the finished work of Christ. We are driven to help others deepen a renewed understanding of the finality of our Savior's sacrifice. As believers, we celebrate and share in the privilege of being an active and significant part of HIStory - The Jesus Narrative. We have been given a unique opportunity to share this narrative with others through insights of a grace engaged culture. Using powerful individual stories collected and woven together with the common thread of Christ, our hope is to display and honor the personal and ardent love that our Savior has for each of us.

It's our sincerest hope and desire to use the Grace Journal as an inspirational teaching tool, a demonstration of a life lived in the knowledge of our identity in Christ, and as a resource for our church family as well as those outside of our church.
