Slow Down

Slow Down

by Nick Drake, Director of Media Ministries

I have a good friend who has also been a father figure in my life for the past eight years or so. His name is Don Campbell. Don is the founder and CEO of Feeding Children Everywhere, a charity that empowers and mobilizes people to make healthy meals for hungry children all around the world. He can’t help but help people. I’ve never seen someone give so much of their own time to help others. Don coached me through some pretty tough times in my life. He often had me tag along with him when he was selling real estate, just so he could spend more time with me.

A couple weeks back, Don and I went to a good friend’s bachelor party. It’s a pretty creative group of guys, so you can imagine the embarrassing things we came up with to celebrate our friend getting married. About halfway through the night, a young girl approached us asking for money and told us how her car broke down and she needed to get to Tampa that night. Not thinking much of it, I told her that I didn’t have any cash on me and I started to go on my way. Don, on the other hand, started asking her questions. It was obvious he didn’t believe a word she was telling him. Sure enough, it only took a few questions for her to get confused about her own story and admit she wasn’t telling the truth. I have to admit when I realized she had been lying, it really upset me. My first thought was, “There are people out here who really need help and its people like you that ruin it for them.”

A few minutes into their conversation, two guys approached Don and this girl. We quickly put two and two together and realized they had sent this girl out to go get money. Don, being a great communicator and businessman, took control of the situation and turned the conversation toward Jesus. Before I realized what was happening, they were all huddled in a circle and receiving Jesus into their hearts! Don and a youth pastor with us then set up a way to follow up.

How amazing is that!?

Don took just a few minutes of his life to invest in the lives of others and their lives have forever been changed! How often will we drive five to ten minutes out of the way to fulfill a need of our own? Imagine what the world would be like if we could all take a minute, look up from our iPhones, and see the needs standing directly in front of us. We can make a difference in the lives of others, but it’s going to take a few minutes of selflessness to do that.
