Warning! Comfort Zone Ahead

Warning! Comfort Zone Ahead
Pastor Bill Snell

There is no reason for boredom in the Christian walk. Think about it, what road has the Savior ever taken that led anywhere but to a place of adventure, discovery, and amazement? When reading the Gospel narratives I don’t get the opinion that Jesus’ disciples were ever looking elsewhere for excitement or purpose in life. On the contrary, the life they saw and experienced with Christ was something far more valuable and exciting than anything they had found in the world. Not only had they found adventure in Christ, they also found grace, acceptance and purpose.

Individuals who live without tasting the nourishment of New Covenant blessing are easy to identify. They are the ones who are disturbed and offended by others whose walk differs from theirs. Those without a discovery of grace backslide into “spiritual comfort zones” resulting in dullness of heart, failed performance, and spiritual apathy.

It is my opinion that religious/legalistic spirits masquerade behind vacant, condescending smiles of those who have unfortunately traded their birthright of a “grace-filled life in Christ” for the ease and acceptance of religious tradition, eager to sweep the “spiritual adventurer” off of dancing feet into a purposeless dirge of liturgical insomnia and spiritual inconsequence.

Each of us must steer clear of spiritual comfort zones, by accepting the challenge of Paul the Apostle, as recorded in Phil. 3:13-14,

“forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, press toward the goal of the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”

The call is “upward”, not backward nor downward. Naval gazers woefully neglect the beauty of God’s countenance choosing instead to blankly stare at a collection of lifeless debris.

Look up, and look within! There is where you will find the “goal of the prize”. It is in looking up and within that identity and purpose is discovered, and with “purpose” comes great adventure.
